Regular cold plunging offers numerous health and recovery advantages, including reduced inflammation and enhanced circulation. However, to fully enjoy these benefits, it is crucial to ensure your cold plunge tub water remains clean and free of contaminants. Contaminated water can contain bacteria, which may cause infections or illnesses if absorbed through the skin or accidentally swallowed. Keeping the cold plunge water clean also contributes to a more enjoyable experience.
Fortunately, with some effort and the right tools, it is straightforward to maintain a fresh, hygienic iceless ice bath. In this guide, we will discuss simple practices such as rinsing off before entering, useful tools like skimming nets, and effective sanitizing methods to help you keep your ice bath in top condition. By following these suggestions, you can ensure that your cold plunge is refreshing, safe, and sanitary.

-
Rinse Off Before Entry
-
A brief lukewarm shower can eliminate dirt, sweat, and bacteria from your skin. Additionally, it helps open pores to remove oils.
-
Showering is particularly crucial after vigorous workouts or athletic competitions when you are likely to gather more dirt and sweat.
-
-
Regular Cleaning
-
Change your water every 3 months. If you practice good hygiene before cold-water immersion and follow Desert Plunge's Sirona sanitation protocol, your water can remain clean for 3 months.
-
When cleaning the cold plunge tub, use a non-abrasive cleaner or a solution of mild soap and water to scrub the interior.
-
Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue before refilling.

Water Maintenance
-
On first use or a complete fill of your ice bath tub, use the provided hose filter from Desert Plunge to fill your cold plunge tub with water. Remove any unwanted particles, then test the water with a testing strip from your Sirona Water Sanitation Kit. Consult the dosage tables; balance water with Spa Up or Spa Down as needed. Add 3 TBSP of Oxidizer and wait 15 minutes before use. Add 1 TBSP Sirona Simply Sanitizer.

-
It is recommended to practice a weekly maintenance routine. Test your plunge tub water once a week, or if the water appears cloudy. Test and adjust pH or Alkalinity using Spa Up or Down, following the provided dosage tables. Add 3 TBSP of Oxidizer. If Sirona Simply Sanitizer is less than 30ppm, add ½ TBSP.

Filtration
-
Replace the filter at least once a month. Do not rinse off and reuse filters; always replace with a new filter.
-
If the water flow in your Desert Plunge cold plunge slows down, it is a good indicator that your filter cartridge is dirty and needs to be replaced, or your drain intake strainer needs to be cleaned.
-
-
Keep it Covered
- Always keep the lid of your cold plunge tub closed when not in use to prevent debris from entering and to maintain water temperature.

Temperature Monitoring
-
Freeze damage occurs in extreme cold weather. If you know temperatures will consistently be below 20 degrees, or you see the water temperature on your chiller drop below 38 degrees.
-
Moving your cold plunge tub into a garage or indoors is recommended.
-
If temperatures are consistently between 15 and 32 degrees, it's time to drain and store your plunge for the winter, or disconnect your chiller and plumbing components and use the tub only. If you decide to keep your plunge running outside, be sure to keep a vigilant eye on it. Ensure water is flowing optimally and follow the “Inspect and Clean” steps in Desert Plunge.
-
If using the tub only, once you have disconnected your chiller and plumbing components, be sure to drain the chiller and components of all water and store them for the winter. You can now cap the return and intake holes, keep your plunge full of water, and let Mother Nature do the cooling for the winter!

Inspect and Clean Components
-
Periodically inspect components for signs of wear or for any indications of low water flow. Tighten or replace as needed.
-
For pump troubleshooting, for the 1/4HP model, be sure to drain your cold plunge completely, or plug your intake hole and turn your filter to off mode, before removing your pump. Follow the pump cleaning and care instructions. If issues persist, email Desert Plunge at service@desertplunge.com.
